In case you want to have a realistic background of GE BWR reactor design, there is a brief but accurate description from the NRC Reactor Concepts. The Fukushima units 1-3 are GE Mark I containment designs.
As a former GE BWR Senior Reactor Operator (Dresden Units 2/3) and having worked at Brown’s Ferry and Peach Bottom, it’s disappointing to hear all of the misinformation in the news reporting. Not only the technical description of how the systems work, but also information on radiation, radioactive material, and radioactive contamination., Even supposed experts disappoint me.
A small leak will sink a great ship.

It is interesting to see the internal political battles amongst the outspoken... I'm seeing consultants on MSNBC sticking up for things Glenn Beck said....
ReplyDeleteon one hand, nuclear power is the best solution to global warming as it's now defined.
On the other... it has the potential for environmental disaster.
On another hand... if you look at fatalities or even injuries per MWH across all generation technologies, I would wager Nuclear is among the safest options out there...
I'm sure there are few more hands out there, too.
